The Ryder Cup at Marco Simone

Here’s an excerpt from my article for Links Magazine.

I expected to be disappointed by Marco Simone, but I wasn’t. Yes, there were echoes of the PGA course at Gleneagles, Celtic Manor and Le Golf Nationale in Paris, but there was enough character and challenge to distinguish it from the recent brood of European Ryder Cup venues. But what makes this location special is the wind which becomes particularly influential on the back nine which rises up  a hillside and eventually loops back down towards the clubhouse.

And if the stiff warm breeze, which intensifies during the day, somehow doesn’t cause problems, then the deep and tangled rough surely will. Add to that the length of the course and you have a truly epic test for the American and European teams. As the course starter put it: “It’s paradise in the middle and hell on either side”.
